‘THERE was of course no way of knowing whether you were being watched at any given moment . . . It was even conceivable that they watched everybody all the time.”

That quote from George Orwell’s “1984″ becomes increasingly prescient in light of developments in eavesdropping, pioneered by Google. Recently the company launched a service called Latitude, which allows consenting users to monitor each other’s whereabouts. It’s the company’s latest snooping tool, the most controversial being the Street Views photographic mapping service.

When I tried Street Views by entering my address, I was surprised to see that with a single click a truly Orwellian image popped onto the screen: my house, my car, the newspaper in the driveway. I could zoom in for a clear view of the open window on the second floor and the handy drain pipe that potential burglars might use to reach that window when no one was home.

Google has been working on Street Views for nearly two years, an incredibly tedious process. As remarkable as the computer results are, they still require hired motorists, known as GeoImmersive Data Producers, to drive up and down every street using 11 roof-mounted cameras to snap 360-degree images.

Boston was among the first cities captured by Street Views, but much of Massachusetts remains unphotographed. For example, a two-hour drive from a friend’s house in Lenox to my daughter’s college in Norton yields only two photos: the entrance to the Mass. Pike and, 96 miles later, the exit to I-495.

Google Says Privacy Doesn’t Exist, Get Used To Everyone Knowing Everything About You

The headline practically says it all. Google (NSDQ: GOOG) is being sued by a Pittsburgh couple for posting images of its house on the Internet in Google’s Street Views pages. Google responded, in court no less, that complete privacy simply doesn’t exist in today’s world and the couple should stop crying about it.

Google may be right, in theory. It said in papers filed with the court, “Today’s satellite image technology means that even in today’s desert, complete privacy does not exist.” That’s partially true. With satellites, cameras and other monitoring devices all being tied together by the Internet, it is becoming more and more difficult to completely isolate yourself from view.

But does that mean our privacy should be violated by large corporations looking to provide better mapping software? Shouldn’t there be some boundaries that aren’t trampled in the name of a better product? Google said in the court papers that that doesn’t matter, and implied the idea of privacy is somewhat faulted.

The “Plaintiffs live in the 21st century United States, where every step upon private property is not deemed by law to be an actionable trespass. Unless there is a clear expression such as a gate, fence, or ‘keep out’ sign indicating that the public is not permitted to enter, anyone may approach a home by a walkway, driveway, or any other route commonly used by visitors, without liability for trespass.” Google says the Pittsburgh couple in question had no such signs, and therefore should not have any expectation for privacy.

I can see Google’s point here, but for Google to come out and say that privacy doesn’t exist is not a great publicity move for the company.

Google Street View vine şi în România

Până la sfârşitul acestui an, cel târziu anul viitor, Google Street View va include şi oraşe din România.

Serviciul Google care permite utilizatorilor să viziteze virtual şi 3D mai multe oraşe din lume, lucrează în prezent la cartografierea şi fotografierea oraşelor importante din România, a precizat pentru Ziarul Financiar Alla Zabrovskaia, directorul de comunicare al biroului Google din Rusia.

După ce vor fi terminat de fotografiat, tehnicienii Google vor trece la procesarea imaginilor şi la realizarea colajelor. Fiind o muncă de câteva luni, Zabrovskaia n-a putut oferi o dată exactă pentru când ne vom putea plimba virtual prin România.

Gigantul de internet american Google foloseşte ajutorul celei mai mari organizaţii de supraveghere electronică din SUA pentru a se păzi de atacurile cibernetice. Washington Post scrie că dezvăluirea vine pe fondul disputei dintre Beijing şi Google, care a ameninţat că se retrage de pe piaţa chineză din cauza atacurilor cibernetice şi cenzurării internetului de către Beijing.

Conform unui acord, Agenţia pentru Securitate Naţională- National Security Agency (NSA) va ajuta Google să analizeze aceste atacuri cu scopul de a proteja mai bine compania şi utilizatorii de viitoare intruziuni.

Publicaţia americană relata că NSA caută ajutorul altor agenţii guvernamentale cu rol în apărarea cibernetică pentru a-şi aduce contribuţia la ancheta Google .

Se va încerca evaluarea vulnerabilităţilor de hardware şi software ale Google, dar şi nivelul de sofisticare al adversarului pentru a ajuta firma să înţeleagă dacă are apărarea potrivită.

Conform pactului, NSA va ajuta Google să înţeleagă cum reuşesc atacatorii să penetreze sistemul

, în timp ce compania va împărtăşi tipurile de cod maliţios descoperite în atac.

Potrivit experţilor din industrie, atacurile ce au început în decembrie au vizat codul sursă al Google, limbajul de programare din sparele aplicaţiilor sale, şi au mai vizat alte 30 de mari companii tehnologice, din apărare, energie, presă şi din sectorul financiar.

Gigantul american a apelat la NSA imediat după atacuri, scrie Post, care a remarcat că un asemenea acord ar fi o premieră pentru Google care se angajează în schimburi formale de informaţii cu agenţia de spionaj.
